Recommendations on Materials Loaded:
1 - High Amounts Loaded when filling by hand:
10g flower or sift in 3x7” filter
Tip: Break the flower into smaller pieces around 0.25-0.5g to fill in all areas of the filter.
2 - Platen Size Suggested:
- 3x7” filter suited to 3x5, 3x7, 4x7, 5.5x7” platen size
- 3 - Micron Size Recommended:
- Flower 37-160 microns
- Sift 25-37 microns
4 - Pressing Temperatures Recommended:
- Flower 180-220F
- Sift 160-200F
Tip: Lower temperatures will create a more flavorful extraction whereas higher temperatures will provide higher returns.
How to Use with Flower:
- Verify humidity level of your flower is at least 60% stable in your jar before committing to the next step.
- Carefully break down your flower into smaller pieces, approximately 0.25-0.5 grams.
Tip: Using nitrile gloves will help keep your essential oils off of your hands when handling flowers.
- Create a puck with a pre-press mold, or begin filling the filter by hand leaving at least 0.5” unfilled to use as a fold.
Tip: If filling by hand, fill in all areas, including corners, of the filter so the material is evenly distributed.
Tip: The included plastic sheets can be used to hold open the filter for loading the material.
- With the filter filled and folded, it is now ready to be pressed using your heat press machine.
How to Use Sift
- Create a puck with a pre-press mold, or begin filling the filter by hand leaving at least 0.5” unfilled to use as a fold.
Tip: If filling by hand, fill in all areas, including corners, of the filter so the material is evenly distributed.
Tip: The included plastic sheets can be used to hold open the filter for loading the material.
- With the filter filled and folded, it is now ready to be pressed using your heat press machine.
Important Notices!
- Loading more than the high amounts suggested may result in blowouts of filters or an inability to fit in between the heated platens.
- Use included plastic sheets to help load materials and prevent tearing.
Questions & Answers:
Question: What are the recommended maximum amounts loaded?
Answer: Material type varies with weight and density, as such amounts will vary. The suggestion is no more than 2g per sq/in filter size when using a puck maker or pre-press mold, and 1g per sq/in of filter size when filling by hand.
Question: What Humidity level should my flower be stored in?
Answer: 62% is the recommended stable relative humidity (RH) inside of your flower container.
Question: How to measure the humidity in my flower container?
Answer: A small hygrometer will give you the humidity levels inside the container.
Question: Can I re-press my pucks?
Answer: Yes! Simply fold the puck in half and re-press it. You might have to use a higher temperature to get an extraction.
Question: Do I need to use filter bags for sift?
Answer: Yes, as the material is so fine, a small micron size (25-37 microns) is recommended to for extraction.
Question: Can I extract any oil left over in my filters and/or pucks?
Answer: Yes! There are various extraction methods including re-pressing the pucks, or using a slow cooker and coconut oil to be used in edibles or tinctures. Please check out our blog for helpful information to make the most of your material.
Question: What are the plastic sheets included used for?
Answer: They can be cut or folded to help you open the filters for loading your material more quickly.
Question: What is the benefit of using a puck maker or pre-press mold and filters?
Answer: Usually you are able to fit twice as much material into your filter when using a pre-press mold or puck maker, versus filling the filter by hand. Additionally, it is a helpful tool for your workflow.
Troubleshooting:
1 - How to avoid the filter bags from blowing out?
- Remove excess stems from flowers.
- Use less material in your filter bag.
- Preheating your material first to get it melty before you begin to apply pressure.
- Apply the pressure more slowly.
2 - How to apply the pressure for optimal yield and quality?
- Flower is the easiest material to extract. Slowly compress the puck until the oil begins to flow. As the extraction is flowing, it is important to keep some weight of the downward force on the jack handle to maintain the level of pressure in which the oil is released. By applying too much pressure we may experience blowouts, or even introduce plant matter into our essential oils. Once the puck is mostly extracted you should no longer feel any more release of pressure on the jack handle.
- Sift and fine material will take some practice, so we advise you to preheat your puck between closed platens. They need to only touch the top and bottom of the puck for preheating. No pressure is required. Allow the puck to preheat for 20-30 seconds. At this time the puck should be melty and more likely to flow out instead of building up pressure inside which may cause a blowout. Gently apply pressure onto the puck and give it time to release the oil, slowly applying the pressure throughout the entire extraction.
3 - The yields are not very good.
- If pressing Flower, verify your sealed storage jar’s humidity level is between 60-65%
- Try a different variety.
- Sifting or hashing it first will allow you to press out a product with acceptable yields.
